Is washing wool rugs with water and detergent good for my rugs?

If the wool hasn’t been previously damaged, the proper cleaning solutions in the hands of a professional cleaner won’t harm it. The detergents used are very mild and only allowed to stay on the rug for a short time.

Wool for carpets and rugs is taken from sheep that live outdoors all year round and are subjected to all kinds or weather – snow, rain, sleet, heat, etc. It will get wet many times before the sheep are finally sheared. The wool is naturally greasy with lanolin to protect the sheep’s skin from the ravages of climate and environment.

When the wool is received for processing into fiber, it contains many impurities like dirt, sand, burrs and grease, all of which must be removed before the fibers can be spun into yarn. Most of these are removed in a scouring bath consisting of warm water, either soap or mild detergent and a mild solution of soda ash or other alkaline compounds. These baths remove the lanolin, which is then used in lubricants, cosmetic and pharmaceutical compounds, as well as the solid materials and allows the fibers to become completely wet.

During the dyeing process, the wool is placed in vats where it is exposed to water at high temperature for several hours. Detergents or other wetting agents help to completely wet out the fibers allowing the dyes to thoroughly penetrate the fibers.

Human hair, which can be compared to the wool in carpeting, is washed pretty frequently with soaps and detergents with little harm. The oils are removed, the hair is wet and although the soils are removed, the process doesn’t damage our hair.

Dry cleaners frequently use steam as a tool to remove spots from wool clothing. It’s only used for a short application and doesn’t harm the fibers.

It’s easy to see that after all the wetting that takes place before the wool is shorn and during the yarn processing at high temperatures, the use of a mild detergent and water wash by a professional rug cleaner will not harm your wool rug.

Be rest assured, after Peacock finishes washing your heirloom, it will be as clean as a tablecloth. It’s not just cleaning, it’s an investment into your rug to assure a long life.

Believe it or not, you can keep your carpet and rugs. Studies have shown that carpet is better at trapping allergens than hardwood flooring or tiles. How can this be? Particles and allergens fall to the floor and onto the carpet. The fibers of the carpet trap allergens and particles, reducing their circulation in the air. If you have hardwood floor or tile and have watched the dust swirl around in the sunlight, you know what I mean.

Proper cleaning, and frequent vacuuming effectively sucks up the dust in the carpet, locks it in the vacuum cleaner, and keeps it out of the air.

Professional carpet cleaning by Peacock Rug Care will empty out the carpet that acts like a filter, allowing the carpet to keep doing it’s job.

People often end up purchasing a rug too large for their room. Large rugs are beautiful, warm and adds a definite charm to the room, but the floor also should act like a picture frame. It should draw your eye to the rug. In fact, having several rugs in one room can help to create and delineate smaller areas inside a large room. This works fantastically in open concept rooms where you can have an office, living area and dining room all in one. All rugs can be of the same style, region, color etc., or change it up to create a statement for each area. When it’s all said and done, rugs add an appeal warmth and character unmatched by any other room decor item.

How is that possible? Here’s a little trick that grandma knew but didn’t tell us. Well, she did, but we didn’t listen to her then. When your rug is laying on the floor, it’s collecting sand, grit etc that finds itself all the way to the foundation yarns at the bottom of the rug. Since carpets are designed to hold soils, we need to get them out. Grandma used to beat her rug on the clothesline.

Vacuum your rug, then flip it upside down and vacuum the back. This vibrates some of the sand etc. out from the back. Look at the floor now. You’ll see lots of sand and particulates on the floor. Sweep it up and re-vacuum the top of the rug. A lot more “stuff” comes out that way than just vacuuming.

When the time comes to completely empty your rug and thoroughly wash it safely, call Peacock Rug Care at 613-232-5110.

What can you do if you spill something on your carpet? First of all don’t panic.
Panicking can make a person scrub the carpet which may leave a permanent distortion mark.
Here is a quick tip that is easy and works great.

First blot as much up from the rug or carpet as you can with a dry cloth. With a damp or wet cloth blot the remainder. A small amount of dish soap can be added to the water where you wet your cloth. Keep blotting until no more transfer. Then dry it up with the dry cloth.

Now I know what you’re saying. I know this. Here’s the neat part. Get a dry white or well laundered towel, fold it and put it over the stain. Put something heavy (phone books, small tool box) on the towel and leave it for 12-24 hours. Don’t inspect it before then because you’ll stop the process. (it’s that physics thing) Stains always dry upwards in carpet or rugs. It will wick right up into the towel. You may be presently suprised tomorrow.

If you have any questions or would like to set up an appointment for carpet clean or rug washing, feel free to call Peacock Rug Care at 613-232-5110, or in Kemptville at 613-258-5110.

There are many different carpet cleaning companies in the Ottawa area that clean rugs. Most however, only perform a topical clean to rugs since their equipment is designed only for surface cleaning. Even if the claim is deep extraction, the construction of an oriental rug is very dense and thick. Therefore getting through to the bottom from the top is absolutely impossible. How do I know that? Because that’s how we used to clean years ago. The only way we could deal with animal urine back then was to mask it or saturate it with enzymes. And that’s a big no no with wool rugs. If companies claim total rug structure clean with extraction equipment or similar methods, it just isn’t true..

I was reading a rug cleaners web site last week and it was explaining how it’s not possible to get urine out of a tufted wool rug. I agree with them. THEY can’t get it out. But Peacock Rug Care guarantees all urines out of a rug with our full submersion system. Yes, all. No smell. Sometimes the stains may be permanent, but even most of them will look much better. Yes we do charge more than the average carpet cleaner to wash rugs, but when we return them, they are as clean as a tablecloth.

There has been plenty of marketing information with regard to how unhealthy carpets are, with the purpose of “scaring” you into carpet cleaning. There has also been much in the media about the dangers of dust mites. The fact of the matter is that there are probably more dust mites in your pillows and bedding than in your carpet. The reality of IAQ and carpets is that if a common sense approach is taken, proper weekly vacuuming and periodic professional cleaning, a healthy home will always be yours.

Should I be concerned about dust mites in carpet? No. Most mite allergen is found in bedding and upholstered furniture. Exposure to mite allergen usually occurs while sleeping, sitting, or through direct surface contact with the allergen itself. Dust mite allergen is very large and is not released from carpet into the breathing zone, even during periods of heavy activity. Maintaining humidity levels below 65% and regular vacuuming and cleaning will minimize mite population in your home.

Why has my allergist recommended removing carpet and other textiles from my home? One of the approaches that allergists use in allergy treatment is allergen avoidance in the belief that the removal of all possible places where allergens are held will reduce allergic symptoms. This is a misconception. Although allergen (dust, pollen, mold spores, etc.) may be present in carpet, carpet is not a source of airborne allergen that produces allergic symptoms.

Will removing my carpet reduce my allergic symptoms? No. Removing carpet will not reduce the number of airborne allergens that produce allergic reactions; in fact, removal of carpet may actually increase the amount of airborne allergen, because other surfaces do not offer the capability of holding allergen. Removing allergen materials from a carpet is as easy as regular vacuuming and routine cleaning.

The industry emphasizes consistent guidelines for carpet maintenance to ensure good indoor air quality.

• Carpet holds dust particles, keeping them out of the breathing zone until they can be properly extracted by effective vacuuming and other cleaning methods – a benefit to those who are allergy prone.
